To the south of the region, going across the
Strait of Magellan, the legendary Tierra del Fuego appears, welcoming
visitors is its peaceful city of Porvenir. In the northern part of
the island the oil fields can be found, these belong to the Empresa
Nacional del Petroleo; while in the south the landscape transforms
itself from open extensions of lands called pampas, to dense forests
that cover large areas. During summer you can often see flocks of
sheep guided by shepherds and their well known sheep dogs.
Tierra del Fuego was discovered by Hernando de Magallanes. Its first
inhabitants were the Onas, natives who hunted Guanacos and foxes for
survival. They dressed and built their houses using the skin of these
animals. The exploration of the island began when gold was discovered,
after the "gold fever" ended, the miners became cattle raisers.
PORVENIR
This is the capital of Tierra del Fuego.
It is smaller than Punta Arenas, and has a population of 6.386 inhabitants.
It has all the services and infrastructures required to satisfy
any urban need; such as hotels, restaurants, banks and communication
systems. Great part of the population are Croatian descendants,
who arrived in search for gold. The city of Porvenir was, for many
years, the center of marine and commercial activities in Tierra
del Fuego, playing the important role of connecting the island with
the continent. Presently, the main economic sources are oil, livestock
and king crab industries. Gold extraction has turned into a small-scale
activity.
Although Porvenir has good marine and terrestrial transport services;

home. If you wish, you could take a tour beyond Russfin towards

km from Porvenir. This interesting journey takes you through unforgettable
sceneries. From the road, you will be able to see the particular
beauty of the Fuegian Andes to the south. And to the west, like
a great mirror between the thick forests, is Lago Blanco (Lake)
and it's rivers: Grande, Condor and Chico, where you can enjoy fishing
