CANAL BEAGLE (The Beagle Channel)
Puerto
Williams, the southernmost city of the world, is located in the
Beagle Channel area, which separates the islands of Tierra del Fuego
and Navarino. In the northwestern part of Tierra del Fuego Island
is the Argentinean city of USHUAIA.
The CABO DE HORNOS (THE
CAPE HORN) over flight departs from Punta Arenas and lasts three
Hours. You will be over-flying the Darwin Cordillera (Mountain Range)
covered by the everlasting ice and extended from the south of the
Cordillera de Los Andes (Andes Mountain Range) in an east- west direction.
Then the D'Agostini and Broker glaciers, together with the Seno Almirantazgo
(Sound) are over flown; allowing you to see the origins of the glaciers.
After flying over the Canal Beagle (Channel) you will see the city
of Ushuaia and Navarino Island, last corner of the American Continent,
which breaks up into islands and channels that end at the rocky formations
in Cabo de Hornos (Cape), our trip's final destination.
Once we are over Cabo de
Hornos, you will be able to see a lighthouse and the Monumento
al Navegante Solitario (The Monument in honour of the Lonely Sailor)
which is surrounded by the Mar de Drake (Drake Sea).
This is an exciting trip, an unforgettable adventure, done under rigorous
safety measures.
CONNECTION TO PUERTO WILLIAMS
By choosing this alternative, after an hour's flight to the south,
you will land on the airport of Puerto Williams,
the southernmost city of the American Continent, located at the Island
of Navarino. This will allow you to see a territory that was populated
by the Yaganes, a nomadic tribe devoted to the collection and hunting
of sea lions that sailed around the islands of the Beagle Channel.
This place was discovered in 1826 by Robert Fitz Roy, Captain of the
English sailing vessel "Beagle". Fitz Roy baptized the channel
and surrounding islands with the name of the vessel and his crew members.

This is the capital of the Chilean Antarctic
Territory. It is situated on the border of the Beagle Channel, in
Navarino Island. With a population of 2.400 it is considered the southernmost
port of the world, naval base and main commercial center in the area.
Puerto Williams has a Hostel, an airport, communication systems, a
museum and a yacht Club. This is an obligatory stop-point for sailors
coming from around the world whether they're starting or ending their
journeys to Cape Horn.
Initially Puerto Williams was called Puerto Luisa, but in 1956 it
was renamed after Juan Williams, who took possession of the Strait
of Magellan and its surrounding territories in the name of Chile in
1856.
On the Island of Navarino were the biggest settlements of the Yamanas/Yaganes
(an ethnic group), which makes the island an important archaeological
treasure. Part of this can be seen at the local Museum.
